To connect with us, visit . We are looking for a smart, ambitious reporter for Burlington, North Carolina -part of USA TODAY Network - as we create a new beat that will drive regional coverage in our central North Carolina newsrooms. This is not a typical "health reporter" beat. We're doing something new by creating a role to look at maternal health, examining the whole spiderweb of things that cascade from the quality-of-care mothers-to-be and new moms receive. We also will do strong journalism around some of the factors that lead to poor maternal health care, like systemic racism, misogyny and poor social welfare programs. This is a great opportunity for a curious, creative journalist. We want someone with good writing and reporting fundamentals who wants to learn to be a better writer. We value writing coaching. Also, this beat involves a mix of longer enterprise and daily stories. This reporter will produce 2-3 strong daily, audience-grabbing stories every week while pursuing slightly bigger projects, things that take 60-80 hours to complete with our help. Even larger projects are on the table in Year Two, with success and productivity in the core role. The ideal candidate is a journalist who will find sources who are doing the real work, behind the scenes, and pair those insights with data and stories from regular citizens. You will be set loose to dig for a story, and then with our help tell it well. We want someone who hustles and is eager to learn, then in 2 years wants to move up in the USA TODAY Network-Southeast region to a bigger job. We see our role as providing the attentive investment in talent, and then acting as a farm team for larger newsrooms looking for great journalists. Of course, this part of North Carolina is an excellent place to live, so some people stay, and we give them new, challenging and interesting assignments. We also are looking for someone who understands that the best reporting can reveal gaps in opportunity and fundamental wrongs or systemic bias in our midst. A portion of this reporter's focus will be on using data, technology and old-fashioned reporting to explain the demographics of our changing nation and the disparities in opportunity that have divided us. Responsibilities: * Independent reporting. You will identify your own stories, find sources to tell you the things no one knows, analyze data, do the reporting, and write.
* Developing your own great beat ideas.
* Team projects, with strong collaboration and communication.
* Making great connections in the community, analyze the trends and connections between healthy people and healthy systems and good outcomes. Tell the resulting narratives in interesting ways. Becoming comfortable using data. Requirements: * Bachelor's or master's degree in journalism or data-related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Proven track record of reporting, research or writing. Clear, powerful writing skill is a plus, although we are good at coaching writing.
* Fluid with multimedia and social tasks.
* Dogged reporter.
* Wide reader.
* Values diversity and can talk to everyone. Gannett Co., Inc. is a proud equal opportunity employer committed to building and maintaining a diverse workforce.
