Job Description:
Position Summary The Division of Genetics and Metabolism in the
Department of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill (www.med.unc.edu/pediatrics/gene) seeks an ABGC
certified/eligible genetic counselor. This is a Clinical
Instructor, fixed-term faculty appointment. Strong candidates will
have experience in pediatric inpatient settings and with pediatric
and adult outpatient genetic clinics. Excellent counseling,
teaching, organizational skills, and independence are essential
qualities in the candidate. Competitive salary commensurate with
experience. Responsibilities include performing patient intakes,
providing genetic counseling and follow-up in general pediatric and
adult genetics and metabolism clinics. The successful candidate
will participate in determining the appropriate laboratories to
send genetic and metabolic testing and providing follow-up to
patients/families on all genetic test results. All providers are
expected to maintain accurate and timely medical documentation
through the UNC Electronic Medical Record system ( EPIC ). In
addition, this individual will have scheduled on-call time, working
closely with the MD clinical geneticists in the inpatient setting,
during weekdays. Opportunities will be available to engage in
ongoing research projects. The Pediatric Genetics team includes
physicians, genetic counselors, metabolic dieticians, and nurse
practitioners, who work collaboratively in caring for their
patients and families with compassion and evidence-based care. We
also have an active accredited categorical and combined pediatric-
genetics residency training program. Our team works closely with
colleagues from across the medical center, including Cancer
Genetics, Maternal Fetal Medicine, and the Cytogenetics and
Molecular Genetic Laboratories. Faculty members in the Division are
actively involved in hearing-loss research, mucopolysaccharidosis,
and other LSD translational research, clinical studies evaluating
the utility of using next generation sequencing for newborn
screening, quality improvement projects and with the state birth
defects registry. The North Carolina Children’s Hospital is part of
a busy quaternary care medical center and a major referral center
for children with complex conditions in the state and region.
Providers at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital care for
children in inpatient settings as well as through a comprehensive
children’s outpatient center located in the same building, enabling
children to see multiple specialists in a single visit. The North

Competencies, And Experience The ideal applicant will have
excellent counseling, teaching, and organizational skills. They
should be detail-oriented with the ability to manage comprehensive
patient records and comfortable seeing patients independently
through a variety of practice models, including telemedicine. They
also should have a commitment to ongoing professional development
in the field of genetics and pediatric care.
