The Humane Society of the Piedmont's Planned Pethood Clinic is seeking a full time wellness and high volume spay/neuter associate veterinarian. Candidate should be comfortable performing up to 20 sterilization procedures per day in addition to pre-operative and wellness exams and basic sick care, e.g. simple ear infections and dental cleanings. Essential Job Functions 1. Provide quality preventative medicine to the community 2. Educate clients about the value of preventative care such as heartworm and flea prevention, while providing excellent customer service and care to clients 3. Vaccinate pets against rabies and other disease, implant microchips and perform other veterinary medical procedures 4. Work and communicate with other veterinarians and technicians to provide the best medical care 5. Examine animals preoperatively to determine their ability to undergo anesthesia and surgery 6. Perform surgical sterilizations 7. Examine animals postoperatively to ensure appropriate healing 8. Supervise post-operative rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery 9. Access individual patient issues, and provide appropriate solutions 10. Creatively problem solve on a daily basis 11. Make reasonable and sensible medical decisions 12. Follow and support all organizational and medical protocols 13. Communicate effectively with the Medical Director to keep management apprised of all out of the ordinary situations 14. Communicate any issues concerning staff, patients, training programs to the Medical Director, Executive Director, or Clinic Manager 15. Provide input and communicate any issues regarding the clinics disease control protocols, surgical protocols, or other medical issues with the Medical Director or Clinic Manager as appropriate 16. Behave in a manner that upholds both personal and professional standards, as an ambassador of PPSNC/HSP, at all times, while observing our team values 17. Be available to travel and train as requested 18. Strive to continually improve all training programs 19. Be a leader among staff, displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members 20. Ensure all clinic staff members are adhering to proper pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients 21. All other duties as assigned Wellness Techniques & Skills 1. Treat, and prevent an array of animal diseases and illnesses 2. Prescribe necessary medications 3. Administer vaccines to prevent common diseases 4. Communicate with animal owners to answer questions and educate them on preventive care 5. Educate the public about zoonotic disease 6. Collaborate with veterinary assistants and other staff to provide top-notch care to clients and patients 7. Advise animal owners regarding sanitary measures, feeding, general care, medical conditions, or treatment options Surgical Techniques & Skills (will train) 1. Adhere to aseptic/sterile techniques while scrubbing, gowning, and gloving 2. Adhere to sterile field throughout the surgical process 3. Perform efficient and concise entrance into abdomen 4. Perform safe and correct square knots 5. Perform safe and gentle spay hook technique 6. Performance of the ovarian cutaway technique in canine patients 7. Performance of the ovarian pedicle tie in feline patients 8. Usage of the modified Millers knot, able to set using carmalt 9. Complete efficient, safe, and attractive closures, utilizing cruciate sutures 10. Demonstrate principles of gentle tissue handling Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities 1. Must be a licensed Veterinarian in the state of North Carolina 2. Must maintain all current and correct licensure 3. Physical Requirements o Must be able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours o Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help o Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly and have a good range of motion, including a reasonable degree of agility to move through tightly cramped areas in various situations o Must be able to see fine detail in a variety of situations o Must have acceptable sense of touch, smell, hearing and vision o Must be able to work in potentially extreme environmental temperatures o Must be able to work and reach on hands and knees o Must possess excellent hand-eye coordination and balance o Must possess an acceptable degree of dexterity in hands and fingers 4. Emotional/Mental Requirements o Must be able to work efficiently and effectively under stressful conditions o Must be able to respond quickly to a variety of medical situations (with training) o Must be able to cope with death either due to surgical complications or euthanasia o Ability to rapidly and accurately process information o Ability to delegate tasks and make decisions o Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help o Ability to manage and handle frustrating situations and remain calm Work Environment The offices and operations of a high volume spay/neuter clinic can be high stress and very busy at times. This position is scheduled for 5 days/week, usually Monday through Thursday with alternating Fridays and Saturdays. The schedule can change and may sometimes require weekend or evening hours to complete the job, this can include working overtime depending on clinic needs. Candidate must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice requests.
